Transforming naval training with virtual & mixed reality

Training naval crews for emergency situations such as helicopter crashes or flight deck incidents is complex, expensive, and risky. Real-life drills require aircraft, equipment, and large teams, making them difficult to repeat frequently.

We designed an XR-based training system that allows naval personnel to safely practice critical operational procedures in a realistic virtual and mixed reality environment. The platform simulates high-risk scenarios while capturing performance data for training analysis.

Challenges

Overcoming limited access to real equipment for training.

Safely simulating rare emergency training scenarios.

Facilitating complex flight deck procedures.

Reducing high cognitive load during active navigation.

Designed Solutions

Crash on deck

Simulates helicopter crash scenarios on naval flight decks, allowing crews to safely practice emergency response procedures such as fire suppression, pilot extraction, and coordinated rescue operations. The immersive environment enables teams to rehearse rare, high-risk incidents repeatedly without relying on real aircraft or live drills.

Engineering the XR intervention

Designed a collaborative XR training system that combines virtual reality simulations with mixed reality overlays to recreate real naval operational environments. The platform enables multiple crew roles to train together while following SOP-driven procedures, ensuring accurate execution of emergency response tasks and capturing performance metrics for evaluation.

Helicopter landing and lashing

Provides realistic training for helicopter landing coordination and securing procedures on moving naval decks. The system guides crew members through correct lashing sequences, positioning, and communication protocols, helping teams practice complex operations that require precise timing and coordination.

Spatial interaction over procedural memorization

Transforms traditional instruction-based training into spatially guided interaction. Mixed Reality overlays visualize procedural steps directly on the deck environment, highlighting work zones, lashing points, and movement paths. This approach allows trainees to learn through real-time interaction rather than memorizing complex procedures.
